Gamma Rays

(i) Nature: The gamma radiations are high energy electro- magnetic radiations with a very short wave length of the order of 10 pm. They are not deflected by an electric or magnetic field. It is due to the absence of electric charge associated with them.

(ii) Velocity: These radiations travel with the speed of light. i.e., 3 x 108 ms-1.

(iii) Ionizing Power: Due to their high velocity and almost no mass, these radiations have very high penetrating power. For example these radiations can easily penetrate through a lead of thickness of about 15 to 20 cm.

(iv) Effect on photographic plate and zinc sulphide screen: Due to their least kinetic energy these radiations have very little effect on photographic plate as well as zinc sulphide screen.
